Quick answer: what you buy when you say Lake Como is three things
Water with mountains behind it, a formal villa with a garden, and an elegant, pared-back look. Two of the three exist at Lake Maggiore, in Piedmont and in Umbria at a lower venue price. The third, Como's own villa architecture and the address your family recognises, exists only at Lake Como.
Using the 150-250 EUR per head and villa hire from 3,000-10,000 EUR before catering that a working Italian supplier quoted in April 2026 for lakeside Como, food and venue alone come to roughly 16,000-31,000 EUR for 80-90 guests. A total budget of 40,000 EUR therefore fits at Lake Como only at the very bottom of that range, while the same sum sits comfortably in Umbria, in Piedmont, or on Como's eastern shore.
This is the most common crash in a wedding abroad, and it looks the same every time. The dream is anchored in pictures of Lake Como or Tuscany, the first quote arrives, and the couple is left with a number that does not add up. One couple planning for 80-90 guests under 40,000 EUR put it this way: the dream had always been an elegant, minimal wedding at Lake Como or in Tuscany, and it had slowly dawned on them that it might not be possible.
The answer is neither yes nor no. It is a trade, and it can be made deliberately.
What you are actually buying when you say Lake Como
Lake Como is not one property. It is three that happen to sit in the same place.
- Water with mountains behind it. The lake view with an alpine silhouette is the one in the pictures you saved. It also exists at Lake Maggiore, one lake to the west, and in gentler form at several of the northern Italian lakes.
- The formal villa with a garden. A historic building with terraced gardens running down to the water. That exists at Maggiore too and, without the water, as castles and historic residences in Piedmont and Tuscany.
- The address. Having Lake Como printed on the invitation. That exists only at Lake Como, and it is fairer to say it plainly: if the address is what you are buying, do not go somewhere else, cut the guest list instead.
The value of splitting it up is that you can compromise on one of three instead of on everything. Most couples find it is the third they care least about.
The numbers, and where they come from
None of the figures below is a market price. They are what named sources said they paid or charge, with the year and guest count written out. Supplier prices move, and the only thing that binds is a quote for your own date.

The most important row is the first, and the reason is that it is the one most often misread: the venue hire excludes the food. It is the single most common misjudgement when a couple does the sums on Italy.
40,000 EUR, 80-90 guests: is it possible?
At Lake Como: only at the bottom of the range, and not in a villa. Do the arithmetic yourself. 85 covers at 150-250 EUR comes to 12,750-21,250 EUR in food alone. Add a villa hire of 3,000-10,000 EUR and you are at 16,000-31,000 EUR before photography, flowers, music, transport and your own travel. If you land at the top of both ranges the budget is already gone.
There are two ways out, and they are not the same size.
Change the venue type, keep the region. The same supplier pointed to Como's eastern shore and to restaurant and castle venues as the cheaper options within the same area. You do not have to leave the lake to bring the cost down, you have to leave the villa category.
Change the region, keep the feeling. That is the bigger lever, and it is what the next section is about.
And a third thing that is not a lever but an arithmetic error: keep what you pay separate from what your guests pay. The two are conflated in almost every budget thread, and that is where most calculations break. A ceiling of 350 EUR per guest is their cost for travel and accommodation, not yours.
The regions that give the same feeling for less

A couple who married in Italy in 2025 summed up the trade better than we can: it is doable, but not with Lake Como vibes. They had 55 guests in an olive villa for a week at 15,000 EUR in total. Another couple in the same thread married for under 10,000 EUR with 23 guests over three nights. Both described the same thing: what disappeared was the villa type and the level of decor, not the wedding.
Sorrento or Lake Como in October
The question gets asked word for word, and it deserves an honest answer with a clear limit. What we can say: October is a transitional month in both places, and the northern Italian lakes generally get more rainfall than the coast further south. A covered rain plan is therefore not a formality at Lake Como in October, and an outdoor ceremony late in the day turns cold once the sun drops behind the mountains.
What we do not do is publish degrees and millimetres. We have no named meteorological reference period to cite, and a guessed monthly figure you book on is worse than no figure at all. Ask the venue for last year's actual experience instead: they know exactly how often they moved dinner indoors in October.
Objections couples raise themselves
None of these are elopements. With food, accommodation, flights and decor for a group, 15,000 runs away from you. Often that is true. If the budget has to carry everything for a group then 15,000 is tight, and that is exactly why separating your cost from your guests' cost is decisive.
Slovenia is much cheaper than Italy. That advice was met immediately with the reply that Slovenia is no longer much cheaper than parts of Italy. We take no position on the substance. The lesson is methodological: destination price advice ages fast, and the only reliable check is a current quote for your own date.
